  1. What in the speech has influenced organizations?

“I Have a Dream” is a perfect rhetorical work. Martin applied numerous rhetorical elements to succeed in communicating with the organizations. His first success was developing speech’s structure. He starts by showing the condition and the plight of the Negroes; he says that the Negro are “crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination” and that the blacks are living on a “lonely island of poverty” in the midst of a “vast ocean of material prosperity” (Luther, 1963, p.1). He follows this by listing Negroes’ problems. Martin continues by highlighting the truth of civil right activists. He says that the suffering of the blacks has been caused by the whites, and the civil rights are on the right path; he encourages them to operate “on the high plane of dignity and discipline” and not allow their “creative protest to degenerate into physical violence” (Luther, 1963, p.1); finally, he shows hope for brighter future.

Martin utilizes pathos in his speech; the successful usage of pathos makes the audience hate racism instead of the blacks. To show the weight of problems Negroes are facing, he says that Negroes are “crippled” by the “manacles of segregation” and “chains of discrimination.” He contrasts racism and racial justice as “dark and desolate valley” and a “sunlit path” (Luther, 1963, p.1).

Martin also applies logos and ethos. The linguistic elements make clear the injustices that the whites have committed. He refers to America’s foundation when the Declaration of Independence gave equal right to everyone, black or white. The white, however, neglected this declaration; he compares this to “a bad check” (Luther, 1963, p.1). Martin applies rhetoric tropes, question, and metaphors to influence the organization, which he successfully achieves.

  1. Identify three things from the speech that has dramatically influenced the workplace.

Martin’s work enhanced unity in workplace. In the speech, he says he has a dream that “the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave-owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood” (Luther, 1963, p.1). Unity at workplace is prospering in America. Martin fought against racial segregation. He said that black children were “stripped of their selfhood” and dignity by “signs stating ‘For Whites Only” while black adults were “judged by the color of their skin” (Luther, 1963, p.1). Many organizations today embrace cultural diversity in entire America. Finally, Martin fought for equity and equality in the society. He painted a picture of the future where blacks and whites will equally share social amenities, jobs, and legal rights. America has successfully achieved equality and equity to its entire people despite their race and color.

  1. Do you know of anyone who has been able to motivate the workplace like MLK?

Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela, and Barack Obama

  1. Other thoughts?

Many leaders have echoed social justices in different situations, which have directly or indirectly influenced workplace. However, Martin Luther King’s “I have a Dream” was much more effective and efficient following its timely delivery. Abraham Lincoln drew several speeches in his life in pursuit of unity and justice to all. Nelson Mandela fought to end racial segregation in South Africa (apartheid). His actions led to his 29 years imprisonment. Just like America, South Africa has achieved unity both at workplace and other social settings. President Obama, in most of his speeches, has repeated the call for unity of America. In his speeches, his belief in the strength of a united nation is very strong. In some occasions, he has challenged the workplace on the ground of their social justice.

  1. Summarize your impressions of the speech.

Martin Luther King was a visionary who applied his rhetorical talents to inspire America. The success of the speech was based on his knowledge of the American society, knowledge of the fruits of a united nation. He delivered his speech at timely period, which stirred America almost instantly. The fruits of Martin’s dream have been unity in workplace, abolition of racial segregation institutions, and the practice of equity across America.
