In our consumer society with its materialistic and exploitative attitude towards the environment and people around us we seem to lose the most vital human qualities such as love, compassion, mutual aid and understanding. Now it is time to change our world outlook and to practice some acts of random kindness in our everyday life.

Nowadays there are a lot of charity and altruistic communities which provide financial aid and moral support for those in need. Studying the Random Acts of Kindness Foundation site, I was wondering how many opportunities of doing something good to other people we miss every day!  I decided to start my list of good deeds with adopting a soldier. At Random Acts of Kindness Foundation website I found the link needed for this task. I also decided to choose a soldier who did not have the family or friends to receive e-mails from. I carefully composed the letter, where I thanked that guy for his service, saying the best words of encouragement and gratitude. I thought that the letter would not be enough and packed a care package for him with some snacks, hygiene items and books. The boy replied me soon saying how he appreciated my care. We agreed to become pen-pals and exchange letters from time to time. My feelings were a mixture of excitement, happiness and joy. I even seemed to forget all my problems which bothered me at that time. Such feelings also have a scientific explanation. Lauren Miller (2010), for example, a stress relief expert, points out, that there is a strong link between gratitude and random acts of kindness and overall good health, including stress reduction, inner peace and happiness” (para. 1). I made up my mind to share this kindness idea with my friends and encouraged them to do the same!

It is known that there are some children who have difficulties with their studies because they simply do not have an influential adult to help them. At Random Acts of Kindness site I studied the materials about school learning programs. I also got to know that the school in our neighborhood needed some volunteers for this kind of job. I offered my help to the children with their homework once a month. It was a great chance for me to refresh my knowledge in Mathematics, History and Physics! I even made friends with one of the boys from this school as well as with his parents, who were very grateful for my help. I am sure that doing such random acts of kindness can also stimulate other people around you to do the same. By the way, Inga Kiderra (2010) in her article discussed the contagiousness of kindness. She tells that researchers from the University of California, San Diego and Harvard “provide the first laboratory evidence that cooperative behavior is contagious and that it spreads from person to person. When people benefit from kindness they “pay it forward” by helping others...” (para. 2).

Pro-social behavior also means taking care of our environment. One of the greatest ideas to save our planet is to use less plastic. First of all, I chose to buy a cloth bag instead of using a plastic one. I also cut down my use of plastic bottles and started buying water and beverages in glass. I felt that even this small act of kindness would benefit to the mission of protecting our planet. I encouraged my friends and members of the family to follow my example of taking care of the environment.

Another idea was to pack some of the used clothes and school supplies which I did not need anymore. My parents helped me to organize a clothing drive in our neighborhood. To my surprise, many people made considerable donations, providing their used things. After that we called one of the organizations which kindly agreed to deliver our package to the local shelter. That day we even had a family celebration on this occasion! I felt so great knowing that I did something very important for other people, wondering how easy it can be. I seemed to become healthier and more energetic. Miller (2010) points out, that  when you are “ practicing random acts of kindness in your life, you end up feeling safe and connected to that which is good and true in this world and the result is inner calm, clarity of thinking and a heart full of love" (para. 4). I am sure that people will share this positive experience with others and that this kindness idea will spread further.

One day I noticed that one of my classmates was unusually quiet. I knew it was a great chance to practice active listening and to show my compassion and empathy. I offered my friend to have lunch together. I delicately asked him whether he was in some trouble and needed my help. I got to know that he had quarreled with his parents and felt very sad about it. I listened attentively and expressed my compassion and benevolence. We discussed the whole situation and reached a conclusion that it was not that hopeless. I felt that I did a great thing by lending my shoulder for a person in trouble.

At the end I would like to emphasize the importance of doing such small acts of random kindness. Pro-social behavior is not only a scientific term, but it is also a wonderful philosophy of love, help and compassion. New scientific studies only prove the old biblical axiom, “Do to others as you would have them do to you” (Luke 6:31, NIV).
